Unlocking Marginal Fields at Subsea Expo 2017

With increasing pressure on the industry to find economically viable ways to develop marginal oil fields in the UK North Sea and further afield, NSRI (National Subsea Research Initiative) is looking to help the industry adopt a collaborative and integrated approach to exploit the potential of untapped ‘small pools’ (oil and gas reserves less than 50 million boe). As the technology arm of Subsea UK, NSRI will be hosting a workshop at Subsea Expo 2017 on Thursday 2nd February to highlight the work that has been done to maximise economic recovery from small pool developments across the UKCS. The event will welcome a host of industry experts to the stage to showcase their involvement and provide a platform to discuss the next steps, looking at what is required to unlock reserves that have previously been deemed uneconomic.

Advances in Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), autonomous inspection technology and the challenges posed by a sustained low oil price will be amongst the topics under the spotlight at Subsea UK’s 2016 Underwater Vehicles Conference. Formally known as the Subsea UK ROV Conference, the industry body has cast the net wider to include the country’s growing underwater robotics community.

Nominations Open for Annual Subsea UK Awards

Nominations have opened for the 2017 Subsea UK Awards. Now in its 11th year, the awards seek to recognise companies and individuals who are leading the way in Britain’s successful £9billion subsea sector. Entries are being sought for the best subsea company of the year (large and small), the most promising young person in the sector, the most exciting new enterprise and the individual who has made the most outstanding contribution to the subsea industry. The awards will also recognise achievements and innovations in technology, sponsored by Simmons & Co International, safety and exports.

NSRI to Support Companies Get Their Technology Off the Ground

NSRI to showcase UK’s academic expertise

The National Subsea Research Initiative (NSRI) is bringing together academic experts from across the country to come up with a collaborative approach to unlocking the potential of small pools of hydrocarbons in the North Sea. NSRI is hosting an event in Aberdeen on 22 June to highlight the expert skills that are housed in the UK’s top universities which will help recover 1-1.8 billion barrels of oil which currently cannot be exploited economically. Universities, technology developers and the wider industry will come together to hear about the capability the UK academic community has to meet the challenges, and the developments which can ultimately help progress concepts through to infield implementation.

Subsea UK to sponsor MATE ROV competition for second year. Subsea UK announced today, at Subsea Expo, that it will sponsor an initiative which inspires budding subsea engineers for a second year. The body which represents the £9billion subsea industry has now committed £20,000 to the Scottish MATE ROV competition. The initiative, organised by the Robert Gordon University, encourages young engineers to design and test underwater machinery with help from industry mentors.

A new, exciting initiative between industry and education will bring science to life in classrooms across Scotland. Subsea UK has been working with education bodies and teachers to create a resource which will capture the interest and imagination of primary pupils in science subjects. Aligned to the Curriculum for Excellence, Subsea Channel, will provide teachers with a resource which shows real-life applications of the scientific principles they teach.

Subsea Industry Expecting 2 Years of Tough Times, says Industry Chief

The fast-growing UK subsea sector, which supports 60,000 jobs, is in for two years of tough times and will only weather the storm if it embraces innovation and new technology, says industry body. On the opening day of Subsea Expo, Europe’s largest subsea event, the chief executive of Subsea UK told delegates that the industry is facing considerable challenges but the fundamentals in subsea remain relatively strong and the sector could see a significant improvement in 2017 – 2019.
